Late trains and new toys and baseball
Oct. 6th, 2005 08:12 pmDespite waking up early, I hardly had any time at work today. I left the house around 7:15 to get to the office early because I was up and thinking about stuff. The subway was running super late, so I didn't get to work until 8:30. I was productive until noon, and then it was time for the company outing to Kings, a local bowling alley that used to be a movie theater. The outing ran from noon-4 and I wasn't sure I really wanted to stay for the whole thing, but they were having a raffle at 3-ish of the "you must be present to win" variety. I never win raffles, but I figured that it would be just my luck that my name would get called and the wrong people would notice my absence.
So I stuck around, and wound up winning a shiny new black iPod nano in the raffle. I had been talking about buying one, so Kelly was a little skeptical when I met her in Harvard Square afterwards. She said "really? You didn't just go buy it while you were downtown?" The nano is a nifty music player but it doesn't come with a lanyard or anything so I need to pick up some accessories before it can replace my iPod Shuffle. We just picked up an iPod adapter for my car stereo, so this will be great for some less random music on road trips. I may have to make playlists, which I am lousy at (all of my playlists are about 80% identical, regardless of their intended purpose).
Because we were using my car for errands over the weekend, I did make a playlist of songs I think Kelly won't mind. One of these is Belle and Sebastian's "Piazza, New York Catcher" which is very innocently about NY Mets catcher Mike Piazza being a closeted homosexual. It came on while we were driving around on Sunday, and then we were watching baseball last night and Mike Piazza was doing commentary and Kelly kept pointing out how gay he looked. We caught the beginning of last night's game at the pizza place in Davis, where there is a large TV and a good crowd but the food is not all that great. The Red Sox were doing great when we left, but we heard The Error and then the decisive home run over the radio as we pulled up in front of our house.
I'm going to sleep early tonight and hopefully being functional tomorrow. This week has been full of scheduling oddities, like how I made it to work on Wednesday morning just in time for an important meeting only because I aborted my gym visit after realizing I had forgotten my black socks. Tomorrow, I am just hoping to go to work and possibly to Shabbat services afterwards.
