Long, rainy weekend
Oct. 9th, 2005 11:43 pmRainy holiday weekends usually drive me slightly insane, but this one has been good. Kelly and I went to our friend K's surprise 30th birthday party last night. She was totally surprised, to the point where she stopped her girlfriend as they were about to walk into the room and said "hey, I think this is a private party." The look on her face when she opened the door was awesome. Today I went to the gym, fell asleep watching football, and made a previously untried sweet potato and lemongrass soup recipe that came out really well. It was the first time I had cooked with lemongrass. Making soup is one of the best things about cold, rainy miserable weather. After dinner, we spent a few hours playing cards at Diesel. We hadn't played cribbage in a very long time, but I still won the first game and Kelly won the second (it always happens that way, we're not sure why).
Brando the cat is doing pretty well. He's been out to explore the whole apartment and he's decided he likes to hide under our bed. We think he's more of a nocturnal cat, so he's hanging out with Kelly now after resolutely ignoring us all morning and afternoon. He and Maura aren't getting along yet, but they're making progress. He walks up to her and they stand nose-to-nose for a few seconds and then she remembers that he's The Enemy and she hisses a little bit. We had to trim his claws a few days ago and that was a bit of an ordeal, but he forgave us within a day or so.
Yom Kippur is coming up on Thursday. The place where I go to services is having Kol Nidre at 5:30, which seems insanely early but I assume it's because Yom Kippur is so late this year and sundown has started happening earlier. I am so not looking forward to the end of Daylight Savings Time.
