Grand opening
Sep. 16th, 2004 04:42 pmThey've been working on a new Super Stop and Shop store around the corner from my apartment (where Somerville Lumber used to be) since before we bought the place. Today, it finally opened. There's a Dunkin Donuts right inside the store, doubling the number of Dunkin Donuts stores within a 2-block radius (downtown, one would have more, but 2 is pretty good for Somerville).
The new supermarket is huge. I went over there to get challah because Star Market in Cambridge didn't have any round challah when I went by earlier to get dinner ingredients.
It's going to be interesting to see the impact on the neighborhood. Thankfully, they have structured the traffic flow so that the store is not accessible by car from the maze of side streets in which I live. They're clearly going to employ a lot of people. However, it's also pretty clear that they're putting a lot of effort into winning business from Somerville's Latino community. They had tons of Latin American products on the shelves, including produce and cheeses and tons of packaged foods. This could be pretty serious competition for the handful of small Latino grocery stores on Broadway between here and Charlestown. I guess we'll see what happens. It's still going to be a while before Starbucks tries to open a store here.
