Kind of a failure as a jock...
Sep. 12th, 2004 08:15 pmI skipped the 5K I was going to run this morning because I played just a little too much softball yesterday. I went up to Gloucester with a few softball teammates and some other people they'd recruited to play in a one-pitch softball tournament. I played catcher all day, which turns out to leave my quads really sore the next day. That and a lack of sleep meant that I was so not going anywhere at 7 this morning.
For the uninitiated, one-pitch softball is pretty much what it sounds like. Each batter gets exactly one pitch. If you miss, hit a foul, or take a strike then you're out. If it's a ball, you go to first base. This makes the games move very quickly, so you can have a one-day tournament and plenty of time left to drink beer. My preference is to have a beer after the game, but this was more of a between and during kind of crowd, so we had lots of very exuberant spectators by the time we got to the finals.
We hadn't really planned to get to the finals. After all, we didn't have a real team and our organizer had bailed on us after an injury last weekend. We all figured we'd play 3 or 4 games before we got knocked out and then we'd go home in the afternoon. Instead, we won our first 2 games, had a 2-hour break, won another game and then had to wait 3 hours to play in the finals. Because it was double elimination and we hadn't lost yet, the finals wound up being two 30-minute games in the dark against a team we'd already beaten 10-3. Unfortunately, we were all a bit zonked and ready to go home after a 3-hour break and we lost both games by small margins. It was 7:45 pm by the time I got on the road for the 45-minute trip home. Still, it was a really nice day with great weather and I got to hang out with some fun people.
Softball season is now officially over, but basketball season is starting up at the end of October. I'm debating whether to play on a co-ed team or a women's team. I had fun playing in the women's league last year, but the season ended on kind of a down note. Either way, this should be a good season and they're apparently lining up some new facilities for games and practices. If I don't have to trek down to Roxbury for practice, that will be really nice. It's actually not too far from work on the subway, but in the dead of winter I really wish there were a convenient way to drive down there.
