Thank you for the congratulations and warm wishes in response to my last post.

Up until a few weeks ago, the plan was that Kelly and I would get married sometime next year when we had time to plan a wedding and my family had recovered from my sister's wedding this August. Then I lost my job and things got complicated. There were suddenly some additional practical advantages to being legally married and also a bit of uncertainty as to how far into the distant future we'd be able to manage a wedding. So, within a week or two, we decided to just go ahead and do it and also to refrain from telling everyone but our parents until afterwards.

Last Wednesday, we drove up to Newburyport, a pleasant little town on the coast, to get our marriage license because we went up there almost four years ago on the first date when we spent a long time just hanging out and talking. We figured we could at least make an excursion of it. We applied for our license and had a nice walk around town. We called each other "Party A" and "Party B" for the next few days when nobody was listening.

The original plan was to get married at the city hall in Newburyport. However, the city clerk had arranged to be on vacation on pretty much all of the days when we could drive up there again. This worked out for the best. They gave us the name of a semi-retired justice of the peace on nearby Plum Island. I was a little bit nervous about this because I'd heard about justices of the peace retiring to avoid performing same-sex marriages.

Fortunately, that was not a problem. When Kelly called him to set up an appointment, it turned out that he was gay too. He and his partner have been together for almost as long as [livejournal.com profile] rsc and [livejournal.com profile] jwg. We made an appointment to come out to their house on Plum Island and get married on their porch overlooking the river.

So that's how we wound up running off to get married on Wednesday. We drove up there, just the two of us, and he did a very simple ceremony. We didn't exchange rings, we just said our vows and drank a toast to one another and tried not to cry. It was a really beautiful day and the whole thing was very romantic. I just felt peaceful and content and incredibly lucky.

Sometime next spring, we're going to have some sort of big non-wedding party to celebrate.

You can do the blood test and license application and marriage ceremony within a few days because you don't have to wait for results on the blood test (they just want a doctor to sign off that they've drawn blood). It's just 3 days between applying for a license and getting it.

After the marriage ceremony, the officiant takes the marriage certificate over to city hall and it can take a month or two for them to get you an official certified copy. Was the 6 weeks that you had heard maybe referring to that?

Congrats!! That sounds like a really nice way to do it.

We have the license but haven't decided on when/where we will actually do it.

Advice says we need codisils (not written in COBOL) to our wills so we need to deal with that next week.
