As a native New Yorker and long-time Yankee fan, I've always said that you'll know Boston has started to assimilate me when I'm willing to contemplate cheering for the Red Sox.

Well, my project to turn Kelly into a baseball fan* requires some small sacrifices, so I fear I've been assimilated. But we saw an awesome game at Fenway tonight. And not only did I cheer for the Red Sox, but I did it without feeling like I was being unfaithful to anyone. Kelly's father called last night to offer us free tickets that he wasn't using. With the forecast calling for thunderstorms we were a little dubious about the whole thing (and not too surprised that he didn't want to drive down). But the weather turned out to be great (just a few raindrops), we had box seats behind the third base line, *and* it was quite an exciting game. I don't think I've ever seen anyone have a 7-run inning (and still only win the game by 1).

We didn't see [livejournal.com profile] rsc or [livejournal.com profile] jwg at this game either (we actually looked this time because we weren't in the bleachers).

* She'd never been to a pro baseball game before I dragged her to see the Red Sox with my co-workers in June. Then we were up in Montreal for a day during our vacation and we went to an Expos game because it's way the hell easy to get tickets. She told her father about that and he thought it was great. She knows most of the rules now too. I'm going to come home one day and find her watching NESN.

We were there, however... in our usual seats (grandstand row 10, just beyond third base). Give us a call next time and we'll wave (God, I hate it when people do that).

Oh, and that was quite a game, wasn't it?

Hm. Now I'm picturing [livejournal.com profile] rsc and [livejournal.com profile] jwg next to each other, standing up and raising both arms in the air, in sequence, over and over. Geez, you two look silly. :-)

I told you, it's assimilation. I've been living here for 5 years now.

Unacceptable!

I am ashamed of you. Horrified.

What kind of news is this to wake up to?

I always figured it must be boring to be a Yankee fan. You cheer for them, they beat Boston. You don't cheer for them, they beat Boston anyway. If anything would ever make you feel that cheering is just something you do for yourself and has nothing at all to do with the game, being a Yankee fan would be it.

So I'm never surprised to hear Yankee fans slumming it, and cheering for someone else (especially Boston). Otherwise, they never get to feel that hot edge of wondering if the team they are cheering for might actually lose.

i must really have taken this philosophy to heart. i grew up rooting for the terrible indians teams of the 60's and 70's and then moved to chicago where i have been rooting for the usually terrible in the 80's and 90's white sox and cubs. this year is so bizarre (both teams in post-season contention in august?!?!?) i keep looking to make sure that the sky is the same color. maybe it will be the same for the red sox?

Well, if it is so, then I will owe [livejournal.com profile] rsc and [livejournal.com profile] jwg a drink, for having ribbed them early in the season about the inevitablity of being Red Sox fans. [livejournal.com profile] drevilmoo will owe them a keg, I think :)

money well spent, if it comes to pass.

hey, if the red sox make it to the post season, *i'll* be rooting for them unless they're playing a team from chicago.

I don't really understand the fun in being a Yankee fan myself, so I applaud the possible change. :) I grew up on the Mets fan side of the tracks in NYC, so can easily cheer for both them and the Sox. (With minor occasional exceptions, of course.)

John is trying to understand baseball, too. I recently explained the Infield Fly Rule to him. :)
