The "freedom fries" phenomenon has spread to the House of Representatives. Ironically, if it weren't for France, we might still be calling them "chips."

I'm not sure what bothers me more, the raging xenophobia or that people have to be so stupid about it.

I'm not even sure it's xenophobia. I often get the feeling it's "Mommy, Timmy didn't let me have my way!!!!!" masquerading as xenophobia. Xenophobia makes is sound so much more mature, you see.

I agree. It's babyish assholism. But both the sentiment that drives the being stupid, and the being stupid bother me a lot, and I don't think one bothers me more than another.

Ah. I prescribe to strict regimen of fatalism and hopelessness, which alleviates these symptoms.

Moving to Utah sort of required this.

When I first read this, my first reaction was to smite my forehead. My second reaction was to muse about whether this means, given my Québécois/Acadian ancestry, whether I now have to call myself a "Freedom-Canadian".

And when you think of Chirac's usual politics, France's status as a test-happy nuclear power, and, well, all the oil pipeline crap that really lies behind his stance, it makes it all unbelievably ironic.

For me, it's not so much stupidity (well, OK, it is, but...) as it is abject childishness. Then again, watch the Commander-and-Chimp when a reporter asks him a question that is either not on the Approved List or that the C&C had forgotten the pat answer to. His brow furrows, and he gets this perplexed/frustrated/petulant look on his face, like he Needs A Nap. Sad to say, it looks like it's catching.
