Earlier this week, Kelly took Morgan to the vet's office to get him weighed. He had lost another pound even though he's been eating a lot. He had also lost his voice, so he could purr but he couldn't meow despite his best efforts. Yesterday, the vet who had been treating his stomach problems said that we were probably seeing stomach cancer that had spread to his throat. The only treatment option she could offer was putting him on a chemotherapy drug.
He might have been able to hang on for a few more weeks, or even months, but he wasn't happy and we didn't want to wait until he was unambiguously miserable. Kelly called the vet last night and we were able to get an appointment this morning to have him put down. We're sad, but also relieved and very certain that we made the right decision.
Morgan was pretty much my favorite cat in the world. He lived with Kelly for more than 10 years, and with both of us since 2001. He was friendly to everyone who came to visit us, especially if they were allergic. He liked to hang out on the couch with me when I was watching TV or reading. He caught toy mice for us every night before we went to sleep. Even when he weighed 19 pounds, he could walk around without knocking stuff over. He made cute faces when you pet him. He was the only member of the household who let me take photos of him on a regular basis. Some of my favorites are here.
We're keeping an eye on our other cat, Maura, to make sure she doesn't get depressed being on her own. It's going to be a few days before we can see how she's adjusting, but hopefully she'll be okay.
