May. 8th, 2004 03:08 pmNot much going on here. I've got a big work deadline at the end of the month, so that's keeping me busy. Apartment-furnishing is coming along well. Today we bought a new dining room table which was so heavy we had to get some random guy to help us get it out of the van. The expansion leaf is sitting on top of our old table and almost covers it completely. At future dinner parties, we'll actually be able to put food and beverages on the table at the same time. That will be good. A certain person's visit in a few weeks is serving as a powerful incentive to get the last boxes out of the living room, for which I'm very grateful. We're also going to finally install a mirror in our bathroom, so I won't have to leave the house with questionable hair anymore.
In other house news, I tested the safety of our neighborhood this week by (inadvertently) leaving my keys sitting in the front door lock all night. Nobody broke in, which was good because I was home alone and the cats haven't been to attack cat training yet.
Kelly has almost convinced one of the other guidance counselors in her office to buy a Tivo. It's too bad they don't have a referral program.
Some readers may recall that I finally managed to turn Kelly into a baseball fan last summer. She keeps saying previously implausible things like "do you want to watch the game?" Sadly, she didn't quite believe me when I told her that single-game tickets sell out really fast, so we were unable to arrange any trips to Fenway this year. She went so far as to try and get tickets to see the Sox in New York or Toronto, but that didn't work out. I'm going to try and get on the waiting list for 10-game packages or something next year, but in the meantime she's bummed out.
I also appear to be dropping out of grad school. I signed up for a summer class, then realized that there was no way I could take classes 3 nights a week through June and July and still be pleasant. Then the fall schedule had a shortage of sufficiently late evening classes and it became apparent that I was not going to make it to a degree at this rate. I'm a little sad not to be following through on it, but I know it's the right decision and it's a good problem to have because it's the result of things going well at work.
Now that I'm not going to be taking classes all summer, we're trying to figure out where to go on vacation. For the first time in a long time, I'm not feeling terribly enthusiastic about traveling. This is either a sign that I should stay home and relax (which would most likely require sending Kelly on vacation by herself) or a sign that I seriously need to get out of town. We may just go up to Vermont or Maine for a few days, but we're also considering a possible west coast trip.
