Kelly and I stopped by Whole Foods near Central Square on our way home from a furniture-shopping expedition to Harvard. They had a whole Passover thing going on, including lots of traditional Passover foods with labels that said "Happy Passover". I picked up a box of "matzo brownies" and noticed that not only were they not marked kosher for Passover, but they weren't marked kosher at all. Then I saw a Happy Passover brochure, the fine print at the end of which indicated that nothing on their "Happy Passover" menu was kosher for passover. I loudly pointed this out to Kelly and she started explaining it to the guy working at the counter, who called over his manager. She hadn't previously considered the irony of selling lots of food labeled "Happy Passover" that Jews shouldn't really be eating on Passover, but she thought it was an excellent point and said she would call her regional manager about it on Monday. On the bright side, they did have whole wheat matzo (no calories!), which I had not been able to find anywhere else this year.
Speaking of Jewish culinary traditions, Kelly and I found a great new Chinese place last night - Chili Garden in Medford Square. I'm not such a big fan of Chinese food, but this was really good and reasonably priced and not too crowded. It's worth a visit just for the cold noodles with chili sauce. They had a bunch of more authentic Szechuan dishes, plus a menu of Chinese food for Americans.
