New computers
Feb. 13th, 2004 07:49 pmIt looks like the problem with the power connector on my laptop is the sort of thing that requires a motherboard replacement to fix.
This isn't the end of the world because it's still working, I just have to fidget with the power cord, and I'm about due for a new computer anyway (I bought this one in January 2001). However, it would be nice if I could avoid thinking about this until after we move. I should really get a friend with a CD burner to help me back up my data just in case.
I had been saying for a while that my next computer would be a Mac. I'm still thinking that would be fun, but I need to seriously go through all the software I use and figure out how easy it would be to switch. There's no Mac version of the Rhapsody player, and I'd need to track down drivers for my printer, but everything else should be okay. I'd probably also want to actually be able to do work on the new system (the current system has only 128 MB of RAM, so it's not really up to running Weblogic and Eclipse at the same time) so I'd have to do some more serious research into J2EE on the Mac. Working on web applications where the Mac isn't a target platform (although that needs to change soon) is also a deterrent to using a Mac as my only home system.
On the Windows front, I've been working with WinXP Pro for the past year and a half and I don't mind it. I'm not terribly attached to it though. Anyone have any Windows laptop recommendations? My current system is an HP Pavilion, and while I haven't had any problems with it until now, Kelly has had a lot of problems with hers (and still can't really get it to stop eating PCMCIA cards), so I'm not sure I'd buy another one.
In other news, I made baked apple slices today for a team breakfast at work (we made crepes and served them with fruit and stuff) and they came out really well. It was very easy too, and I've got leftovers to have over vanilla ice cream tonight.
