Today was not exactly a good day. I have job stress, the details of which I'll skip over because you've heard it all before, and I had to go to the Registry of Motor Vehicles to renew my registration (which can be done by mail unless you foolishly ignore the form they send you because you have no idea what it is because you've never owned a car before).

Going to the RMV is like my own personal version of hell. This is not at all the fault of the Registry. On the contrary, I have high praise for their web site and its accurate forecast of wait times at local branches (they said 4 minutes and 30 seconds, and that's about how long it took). Rather, my horror of the RMV stems from traumatic Driver's Ed experiences in high school and not getting a license until I was 20.

Because I had a tough time getting my license and then avoided driving for a few more years, there's a little voice in my head that still feels like a total fraud with regard to my driving ability and the state's approval thereof. So of course, one of these days I'll walk into the RMV and they'll realize that they never should have let me have a license and then I'll have to take a road test again to get it back and it'll be impossible. (When I explained this to [livejournal.com profile] fj, he assured me that one can take a road test in MA without parallel parking, which made it a little bit better. Kelly, not nearly so helpful, just burst out laughing.) So of course, all tasks that require a visit to the RMV are left until the last possible minute or a month after my registration expires (whichever comes later).

Luckily, my 4 minutes and 30 seconds at the RMV were not nearly so eventful as all that. I handed over some paper and wrote the nice people a check and my car is now legally drive-able again, which is good because we're taking it on vacation next week.
