On Sunday, Kelly and I started planning our summer vacation. This is the first long trip we're taking together (we've gone away for a few 3-day weekends, but this will be a full week). In mid-August, we're going up to Nova Scotia.
There's a high-speed ferry from Bar Harbor, ME (one of my favorite places in New England) so we're driving up there and then taking the boat over. We're driving up to Cape Breton in the northern part of the province for the first few days and then working our way back down through Halifax and along the southern coast to catch the boat back. I'm really looking forward to visiting Cape Breton, because all the photos I've seen are gorgeous. Kelly wants to see puffins. We're going to try and find some mutually agreeable hiking and/or cycling, and maybe do a little canoeing too. Lots of outdoors time, hopefully not too much of it spent in the car.
I'm really glad she's talked me into doing this. I'm terrible at taking time off (before last fall's Stockholm motsscon and Great European Train Trip, I hadn't gone on a real vacation since my trip to Japan in '99) even though I love to travel. And it's nice to have someone to go places with, especially since we're relatively compatible travelers. Not quite similar, but compatible. I've found that when I travel with people like me (wake up early, run around all day, stay up late, collapse, repeat the next day) I tend to burn out towards the end so it's just as well to be going away with someone who believes in relaxing.
