I mentioned last week that exercise was helping me ward off seasonal depression. This past week, I found myself mysteriously transformed into one of those people who has an overwhelming urge to visit the gym. It was very odd. I played basketball on Monday night, went to the gym on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and played more basketball on Thursday night. All this exercise seems to be paying off because I played an excellent game of basketball on Saturday afternoon. My team picked up a solid win and nobody got hurt, so it was really good all around.

Saturday night, Kelly and I went over to Waltham to see Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic, which is Sarah Silverman's stand-up comedy movie. It is funny in places, but not as good as Margaret Cho's first stand-up comedy movie. I knew it was raunchy, but I didn't realize how much so. When in doubt, do not take a woman who runs a group for pregnant and parenting high school students to see a movie where the [white, Jewish] star jokes that the best time to have a baby is "when you're a black teenager." Fortunately, Kelly did find other parts funny and claims she's willing to go out with me again sometime.

Today, I got to combine exercise with my ongoing project to drive my car more often*. I drove up to Wachusett, which is about an hour away, and went skiing. This was the first time I had gone skiing by myself and it was really nice. I am not the most social person in the world when I'm in the process of being mediocre at a new athletic thing, so it was kind of relaxing to be alone. I hadn't been skiing in about 5 years, so I took a beginner lesson and made a bunch of trips down the lower mountain trail. It was sunny and relatively warm outside and the only time I wiped out was when a guy who had also been taking beginner lessons crashed into me from behind at high speed. I'm going to go back next weekend or on one of my vacation days the following week and try again. As a bonus, I wasn't too tired to drive home afterwards.

One more full week at work, then it's vacation and holiday stuff (and a few days of work during which nothing will get done because anyone I want to talk to will be on vacation) for the rest of the year.

*You might wonder why a mass transit-loving environmentalist would be making an effort to drive more often with gas prices so high. Until recently, I drove approximately once a week and really liked it. In about 6 months, I will have a new commute that requires 2 hours a day in the car. It is going to be miserable, but I have this theory that it will be less miserable if I gradually acclimate to using my car on a daily basis so that it's less of a drastic change. So far, it seems to be working.

My readers in the US who are not watching the second season of Bravo's Project Runway are missing out. The intro episode (which they are still showing in re-runs) had one of the best reality TV exit lines ever. Kelly and I were totally hooked on the first season last year, we'll see if this one is as good.
