Nov. 6th, 2004
Kelly and I stopped by Porter Square Books last night. I flipped through The Best American Sports Writing 2004 while we were there. It went to press before the World Series, but they did include Globe sports columnist Bob Ryan's article about that ALCS Game 7 where Grady Little didn't pull Pedro when he probably should have. They really ought to wait until the very end of the year to publish these things.
Also spotted at the bookstore was a chick-lit novel with a familiar but not terribly common name on the cover. When I looked at the back cover, it turned out that the author lived across the hall from me during our sophomore year at Amherst. Now she's getting her PhD and still had time to write a novel. I'm feeling like a slacker because I only work 40 hours a week and it's taking me 3 weeks to follow up on writing a measly tech article that I started discussing with an editor and haven't followed up on. It's been a hectic 3 weeks, but still.
Kelly got some books at the bookstore, but I didn't buy anything because I'm still only 200-ish pages into Quicksilver. It's very good so far, but I'm wondering if I'd have been better off getting the paperback and trying to read it on the T. I just didn't think it would be good subway reading because my commute is so short, so I've been reading magazines on the subway instead.
We've got friends coming over for dinner tonight and I'm making sweet potato and squash soup for the first time this year. Kelly's making roast chicken with 40 cloves of garlic, so we may need to keep the windows open for a while.
