Daylight savings time is totally screwing up my sleep schedule. I protested yesterday that I wasn't going to spring forward unless the weather was actually spring-like, but then Kelly adjusted all the clocks and the computer adjusted itself so I had no choice. On the bright side, everyone loves extra hours of daylight.

Softball in the snow was fun. The field itself wasn't all that snowy. There were lots of big dogs running around (one or two brought by teammates, I think, plus some local dogs that were just there to run around at the pond) trying to play catch with us. While driving up the Riverway on the way home, Car somehow managed to lose a hubcap. Kelly is now accusing Car of being "ghetto" because she's terribly unsympathetic. Hopefully, Car's temporary ghetto status will not cause problems when Car spends a few upcoming weekends parked on the streets of Scarsdale, NY.

Turning to less jockish pursuits, I finished David McCullough's excellent biography of John Adams on Friday evening. I missed my goal of reading it (on the subway) before it was due back at the library by about 3 days. My favorite thing about the book was the absolutely phenomenal amount of correspondence that was incorporated into it. That and reading about Adams' rocky relationship with Thomas Jefferson. There are a lot of ways in which it's very weird to read about the American Revolution while living through the current war in Iraq. Back then it routinely took months to get letters from Europe to the US and diplomacy worked differently as a result. You couldn't give someone on the other side of the world a 48-hour deadline before you invaded their country. I wonder what this war would be like if news of it didn't get to the US until after a three month delay. It might be over before we knew it was starting.

It's odd but I haven't really read much about the colonial period since moving to Massachusetts. My history and political science classes at Amherst were mostly about other parts of the world. Maybe I can find some more American history on my next trip to the library. (As always, everyone likes recommendations.)
