We've been having quiet Saturday nights at home for the last few weeks, for a whole bunch of reasons. I tend to be exhausted by the end of the week, Kelly's still not so social, I haven't had time to plan much of anything and when I try to make plans ahead of time something always goes wrong. But we're going to a Halloween party tomorrow, so total hermitude isn't a danger just yet. And I'm sure that in another week or two we'll have overly busy social calendars again.
One of the nice things about quiet Saturday nights at home is getting a chance to cook. When we cook during the week, it's usually quick and easy stuff. Weekends are for trying something new. Tonight's first experiment was spaghetti squash, which I hadn't had in years and Kelly had never tried. Joy of Cooking said to microwave it. I was a little apprehensive about that because I generally don't use the microwave for anything but reheating, but it worked really well. Unfortunately, Kelly took one bite and made the face that means "there's something odd about the texture of this" so it may get added to the list of stuff that I make when she's out of town. Tonight's second experiment is gingerbread, which is still baking.
Speaking of cooking, we went to see Mostly Martha at the movie theater in Arlington last night. It's a very cute movie about a neurotic chef who suddenly finds herself responsible for her niece and then gets swept off her feet by Mr. Right. Not a terribly original plot, but very funny.
