For the first time in a while, I managed to get through a weekend without crashing out emotionally on Sunday. That's such an improvement.

On Friday, after a terribly frustrating day at the office, I headed over to Diesel to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] bitty and the polyamorists.[0] Bitty was running a little late on account of the subway system, but some other folks I knew were there so it was all good. Had a good time catching up with Bitty when she did finally show up, although it was too bad that she didn't bring [livejournal.com profile] bubblebabble along (especially since [livejournal.com profile] pheromone was doubting his existence).

Saturday was a very important day because Kelly and I made our long-planned trip to the Secret Destination. Kelly had informed me quite a few weeks ago that she was planning a surprise for my birthday and needed a Saturday afternoon sometime around now, so we chose this one. She wouldn't tell me where we were going, which is impressive because she's usually not so good with the surprises. The Secret Destination turned out to be the De Cordova Sculpture Museum, which I hadn't previously visited. We had a great picnic and then walked around the museum and the grounds looking at the artwork. It's a really neat place and it was just enough outdoor activity for the day.[1]

On Saturday evening, we drove down to Walpole for a party at the home of my softball captains. A whole bunch of my teammates were there, as were a few of [livejournal.com profile] pookfreak's softball teammates with whom I used to play football (I lasted about a year in the flag football league, on account of being insufficiently tough). There were also some non-softball people around, including a lesbian couple with a really adorable baby who was at the almost-learning-to-walk stage. Our hosts had set up a badminton net on their lawn, so there was some fierce competition. I hadn't played badminton in years, but managed to do okay and it was nice to hang out and catch up with people.

I spent some time working on my long-delayed article on Sunday. I seem to be making some progress against the writer's block and expect to have it done soon. Then it was time to go play some softball. We played the same team we'd played on Wednesday evening. Wednesday was an unmitigated disaster--our pitching was off, we made some big fielding errors, and the umpire didn't seem to be paying attention. We lost big-time. But we had a much better day today, and won by a score of 20something to much less. I wound up batting 5 times in 4 innings and only struck out the last time, by which point I was so worn out from the heat that it was lots of effort just to hold the bat up.

[0] That could be a band name. "Bitty and the Polyamorists" Except that Bitty plays the French horn and nobody ever names a band after the French horn player.
[1] Normally, I'm all about the outdoor activity. But at Wednesday's disastrous softball game, I tripped over second base and cut my knees up pretty badly. They're healing but not so bendable as usual, so I wasn't really up for a long walk.
