Madness

As you may have read in his LJ, I went to NARAL's Chocolate Madness fundraiser with [livejournal.com profile] fj last night. Hanging out with FJ and having a ton of chocolate is bound to be a good time. Our partners don't do chocolate, so it was just the two of us. Dean made us high-protein whole wheat bread for dinner so the sugar overload wouldn't kill us, but we still desperately needed a cup of tea when we got back to their apartment afterwards. I also got to meet [livejournal.com profile] dalbino83 and a bunch of other nice people whose LJ names I didn't catch.

The fundraiser was at the Cyclorama. They didn't decorate the hell out of it, but it was festive. Compared to other fundraisers I've attended, NARAL didn't do all that much in terms of speeches or trying to raise more money once people were at the event (although we did buy some raffle tickets from a woman dressed as the Statue of Liberty), so it was mostly wandering around and tasting chocolate desserts from about 30 restaurants and bakeries. The unquestionable highlight was a chocolate mousse with kashi flakes on the bottom and a small pastry cone of a citrusy liquid on top, served on a plate with a dab of basil pesto. The combination was insanely good. My other favorites were chocolate cake with poppy seeds and tiny glasses of Valhrona chocolate milk. Walking around with FJ during the presentation part of his celebrity judging stint was fun too. I tried to convince him that he should start a dessert review blog or something, because when the Globe does features on where to go to dessert they always start with "go to Finale and get the chocolate cake" and that's so five years ago.

Anyway, NARAL does this every spring. I'm sure that next year's will be even bigger. It would be fun to go with a larger group of friends and it's a very good cause.

I don't really. I've volunteered at AIDS Walk and helped them out with mailings and stuff beforehand, but that was a few years ago. The last few years, I haven't been able to get my act together to walk or volunteer.

It's June 5th, so if we would want to get our act together, there's still time to organize something. Should we give it the old college try?

That would be fun. Unfortunately, I just remembered to check my schedule and I have a softball doubleheader starting at 3:30 in Brookline. Technically, I could do both if I skipped the AIDS Walk closing ceremonies and did some creative mass transit, but I would probably regret it midway through the second game when the sunstroke set in.

In that case, I'll see what [livejournal.com profile] pinkfish thinks on Saturday before doing anything else.
