(no subject)

I should really start a custom friends group for commentary on the subject of "how cute is my wife?" so as not to annoy the hell out of the rest of my readers, but I'm lazy so you'll have to deal. In case there was any doubt, she remains totally cute.

Kelly was out running errands when one of the upstairs neighbors stopped by. They were in the Dominican Republic for a week and we were keeping an eye on Kitty, their cat. She brought us a thank-you note and a little bottle of Carribean rum. Kelly got back from her errands, walked in, saw the wine bag on the table and said "please tell me they got us diet wine!"

Sadly, the [mostly] liquid diet doesn't include alcoholic beverages. Fortunately, nobody has invented "diet wine" yet. I thought I would miss Kelly's baking the most when she started dieting, but I really miss having wine with dinner on a semi-regular basis. I haven't opened a bottle since New Year's Eve because I tend not to drink alone and we're not throwing dinner parties. I don't really have friends with whom I go out for drinks that aren't coffee. I miss throwing dinner parties too. I think that in another month or two, when Kelly's dieting less intensively, I'm going to try and start cooking nice Friday night dinners regularly and maybe inviting some friends over a bit more often.

Newfound temperance aside, the whole diet thing has settled down to the point where it's no longer a major household disruption. I'm having fun cooking for myself and trying out new things. Tonight, I made tofu, spinach and red peppers in a curry sauce using a recipe from Eating Well magazine, which my mother said was the only really good healthy recipe magazine she'd found. The other night, I attempted fried rice and had a minor snafu. When working with an ingredient that triples in size when you cook it, it helps to make sure you know whether the quantity specified in the recipe is the raw quantity or the cooked quantity. Fortunately, I had scaled it down to begin with, so the kitchen did not overflow with rice.

after this week, I'm in a diet phase that allows wine.

I have a feeling the little yeasties wouldn't take to sucralose. Still, it can't be far behind.

In the way olden days when Weight Watchers was a new concept, they had one very simple plan. It allowed you 3 fruits a day. My Mom's best friend had been on it for months without losing a pound and she was near suicidal. Mom came home from a WW meeting one day in hysterics. Turns out, as you have probably guessed, the woman was using wine as 2 of her fruits every day.

Hey, I'll drink with ya!

(I'll also eat with you if you can stand my restrictions. :)
